The type and number of cherry trees planted
Toneri Park’s cherry blossoms are famous for about 1100 Yoshino cherry trees and Reagan cherry trees. The Reagan cherry tree has a history of friendship between Japan and the United States. Originally, in 1912, Arakawa Goshiki cherry tree seedlings were planted on the banks of the Washington, DC Potomac River.
Later in Japan, the Arakawa Goshiki Sakura disappeared temporarily after the decline due to post-war devastation, construction of the Arakawa irrigation canal, and deterioration of the environment. However, in 1952 and 1982, it was brought back from the United States as Arakawa’s Satogaeri-zakura and planted in Arakawa again.
One of the same homecoming cherry trees was planted in Toneri Park by Mrs. Nancy Reagan, The first lady of the United States, as a proof of friendship between Japan and the United States and was named Reagan Sakura. It is planted near the Toneri Park Service Center. The Reagan cherry tree is currently under treatment because the tree is weakening, but I want you to come back in a healthy state.
In addition, cherry blossoms such as Yoshino cherry tree, Kanzan and Fugensou bloom in the garden of Toneri Park.
In addition, during the cherry blossom season, every day from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, the illuminations at the station entrance on the east side of Toneri Park and the cherry blossoms at night are lit up.
